In an episode that included a few I love you’s for the first time, an incredibly awkward dinner party, and the ending of a marriage, a few characters stood out above the rest. Here’s a look at the best of the best.

1 Jessa & Thomas John
A young, spontaneous marriage is usually vulnerable and explosive. Sometimes, you get the right mix of chemicals. In this case it was a dinner with the in-laws, to cause a detonation. Thomas-John’s father looked quite enthralled with Jessa at dinner, but his mother wasn’t exactly falling in love with her. After tales of heroin, travels, and the rest of her adventures in life unfolded in the 4-star restaurant, the newlyweds came home furious with one another.

Here’s what followed:

Thomas John: “I’m a miracle. I’m a UNICORN! I’m a fucking needle in a haystack, and you’re just a dumb hipster whose munching my haystack.”

Jessa: “I’m embarrassed when we walk down the street because you’re so fucking average. I tell my friends you were a test tube baby just so you have a little edge.”

Thomas John:“You’re my worst nightmare. I’ve never made a mistake like this before. What am I going to do right now? You know why I like hookers, Jessa? They respect me…They don’t buy a bunch of fuckin’ Buddha’s and put them every where so that when we have sex it doesn’t look like we’re being watched by a bunch of fat babies”

Jessa: “You’re a ridiculous person”

Thomas John: “You’re a whore with no work ethic.”

Jessa- *Punches him in the face*

I always say if you’re going to write a break-up into the script, do it right. They did it right.

2 Shoshanna
It’s tough to comprehend the ups and downs of emotions Shoshanna went through in this episode. She discovered that her boyfriend is secretly living with her, which upset her. Then they talked about her feelings about the situation, which made her pensive. Finally, she realized she was in love and that the feelings were returned, which made her elated. You go, Shoshanna. We just hope she has more screen time in future episodes this season, because seeing her face after discovering what a butt plug was is more than worth the price of an HBO subscription.

Hannah is solid as a rock, cooking dinner for four other people, “divorcing” Elijah, and even sharing a bath with Jessa after her tough break-up, just to cheer her up. She let Marnie walk out on said-dinner party as well, just to let her know she’s not getting over that fight they had as easily as Marnie would’ve liked. But she then stands up for Marnie against her ex-boyfriend. What a great friend. Hannah also discusses her use of a butt plug at dinner, which is a very awkward topic to talk about amongst friends. Any questions? Moving on.

4 Marnie
She turned down her ex after he left his girlfriend at dinner just to go talk to her. I don’t know if it was a douche bag move on her part, or on his, but either way it was a powerful moment of the show. Marnie needs to get over Booth Jon, no matter what it takes.

5 Ray
Do you know the only way to bounce back from getting in trouble for living with someone without them actually knowing it, because they think you’re there just to have sex? Say you love them “so fucking much.” Problem solved. That definitely earns a spot on the Ranks for Ray.

6 Audrey
How dare she call out Marnie at dinner?! Marnie is my (Justin) favorite character, so I thought I’d be hurt by what she did, but she did it in such a great way. Calling someone a “Stepford psycho” is quite the punch in the gut, and we can’t hate on it.

P.S: Why was Adam not in this episode?! That’s a load of poop.
