“Plans Within Plans” by MXPX

Why: I applaud MXPX for getting back to the sound that made them (kind of) famous in the first place, but too little too late, guys. I can’t even begin to explain how dated this album feels.
Sounds like: Late-nineties pop punk, without variation, innovation or exception. For some reason, I have less patience for bad lyrics in pop punk than any other genre. This album is largely uncreative, overly honest, fifth-grade-reading-level lyrics about love, growing up and all the other shit you normally hear about in this genre. Through the years, I have found myself being able to stomach these lame lyrics if the song is too catchy to deny, but there just aren’t enough catchy saving graces for me to say I enjoyed this album. If you’re looking for some nostalgic, overwhelmingly ‘90s pop punk, which, admit it or not, we all need a bit of every now and then, save your money and stick with something made in the ‘90s that you already own.
Best tracks: Track 7. Stay On Your Feet and Track 9. Far Away
Listen to this album: Hands down, without hesitation in any situation if your only alternative is Kevin Federline’s 2006 album “Playing with Fire”. Just Kidding! It’s not that bad. “Plans Within Plans” is totally upbeat and could be some fun background music to a summer road trip with your BFFs. You’ll need one super old Volvo, a sunny day and a long stretch of highway. You’ll probably run out of gas, but have a pretty gnarly adventure and almost certainly fall in love by the end. Oh, you know, just some cliche shit to match this cliche album, but fuck it, what’s summer without a few cliches?
