Stars out of five: Four
Who is OFWGKTA? Leading this in-your-face hip-hop collective is Tyler, The Creator, who gained huge recognition for his solo work in 2011 when he won a Video Music Award for Best New Artist and was named the No.2 “Hottest Minor in Music” by Billboard. Also in the collective is: Hodgy Beats, MellowHype, Left Brain, Mike G, Domo Genesis, Frank Ocean, Jasper Dolphin, Earl Sweatshirt, Taco, L-Boy and Syd tha Kyd.
Sounds Like: Old school gangster rap about drugs and killing/fucking bitches, but with new style electronic beats and comedic undertones.
Favorite tracks: Track 8 “50,” Track 10 “Rella” and Track 11 “Real Bitch”
Favorite lyrics: “I need a real bitch/Who can make french toast and suck dick/ She’s 5’6” with firm tits” and “This is for the n***** in the suburbs/And the white kids with n***** friends who say the n-word/And the ones that got called weird, fag, bitch, nerd cause you were into jazz, kitty cats and Steven Spielberg.”
Listen to this album: While you’re pre-gaming one warm weekend evening with your apartment windows open. As friends show up, you turn up the music. You could dance to most of the tracks on the album, but you don’t. You just sit back with your drink in one hand and the other draped carelessly across the back of the couch while you nod your head with the beat of the music.
Strangers who hear the music floating through your windows start showing up. You turn the music up louder. Before you know it, your apartment looks like the inside of a packed club. You’re in a calm, cool, shit-faced state as people around you start to get crazy and a strangely attractive, half-naked girl who’s wearing a legitimate eye patch and knows five words of English shakes her ass in your face.
You’re surprisingly into it. You barely notice the cage full of black squirrels someone just sat on your kitchen counter, the person being taped to the ceiling or the mud fight being orchestrated in your kitchen. You’re not sure what the future of the night will hold, but you’re pretty sure it’ll be odd.
